The Ritual of the Averse Pentagram serves as a daily affirmation for baptized Thelemites, a means of banishing fear and anxiety, a stepping stone to Liber V vel Reguli, the Hexagram rituals, and Liber Samekh, a way to confront superstition over averse pentagrams, and has proven effective in inducing karmic reckoning.

Required Implements

  • A black hooded Tau robe
  • A ritual blade (athame or sword) with belt & sheath

Do not draw your hood.
Banish, consecrate, and purify. Return to the center of the circle.
Cross yourself ☩ and beat once upon your breast.
Unsheath your blade.

Fear not at all; fear neither men nor Fates, nor gods, nor anything.
Money fear not, nor laughter of the folk folly, nor any other power in heaven or upon the earth or under the earth.
Nu is your refuge as Hadit your light;
and I am the strength, force, vigour, of your arms. [Liber AL III:17]

Walk in a centripetal spiral clockwise while reciting the following. Finish at the circumference of your circle facing East.

Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.*

AUMGN.

Stand at the Eastern quarter of your circle. Make the Air-invoking averse pentagram (Aquarius). Give the sign of the Enterer, bellowing THERION. Withdraw in the attitude of Hoor-Paar-Kraat.

Follow the circumference of the circle deosil until you come to the South. Make the Fire-invoking averse pentagram (Leo). Give the sign of the enterer, shouting HADIT. Withdraw in the attitude of Hoor-Paar-Kraat.

Follow the circumference of the circle deosil until you come to the West. Make the Water-invoking averse pentagram (Aquarius). Give the sign of the enterer, whispering BABALON. Withdraw in the attitude of Hoor-Paar-Kraat.

Follow the circumference of the circle deosil until you come to the North. Make the Earth-invoking averse pentagram (Taurus). Give the sign of the enterer, saying NUIT. Withdraw in the attitude of Hoor-Paar-Kraat.

Return to the East, then to the center of the circle, and perform the Analysis of the Keyword.

Hoor hath a secret fourfold name: it is do what thou wilt.
I will know my own Will. I will do my own Will.
I will rejoice in the Will of my god.
I will fear nothing as a soldier of Thelema.
Ra-Hoor is my strength.
O Lord Horus! Come forth and dwell in us,
so that every spirit of the Firmament and of the Ether,
upon the Earth and under the Earth,
on dry land and in the water,
of whirling air and of rushing fire,
and every spell and scourge of God the Vast One may be thou.
ABRAHADABRA.**

Complete the ritual as Horus, leaving behind your restricted self upon the altar (Malkuth). Draw your hood.

I have hidden myself beneath a mask: I am a black and terrible God.
I am come against sorrow, against weariness,
against them that seek to enslave you.
Mercy let be off; damn them who pity!
Kill and torture; spare not; be upon them!

Walk in a centripetal spiral clockwise while reciting the following. Finish at the Eastern circumference of your circle, facing West.

Peace implies war.
Power implies war.
Harmony implies war.
Victory implies war.
Glory implies war.
Foundation implies war.
Alas! for the Kingdom wherein all these are at war.***

Descend upon center circle (Malkuth / the altar), crying IO! as you commit the sacrifice with your blade.

Do not disarm. Turn to face East and sit with your sword in your lap. Meditate.
